Our Initiatives

Parent Involvement

Empowerment Programs

We believe that parents are the primary educators of their children.  Our child development program actively promotes the daily involvement of parents; both in the classroom and as paid staff.

Parents participate in program planning and decision-making opportunities with staff through attendance at monthly Center Committee and Policy Committee meetings.  Parents elect their own committee officers and other representatives who attend meetings and workshops throughout the city and bring back information to the local center and community.  Parents also participate in educational, health, and social service workshops and other activities identified as being of special interest to them.

Special Needs

Programs For Everyone

TRU recognizes the children with special needs and/or disabilities.  We believe that, to the extent possible, these children should receive early intervention and be mainstreamed into the regular classroom.  To that end, 10% of our enrollment slots are reserved for children with special needs and/or disabilities.

Contracts are developed with professionals in the broader community to meet the special needs of these children. Special emphasis is placed upon the development of parents and children in caring for themselves.  Community resources play an important role in this program.

Education

Building Connections

We believe that all children learn by being actively involved in their environment.  Our methods are directed toward the development of the whole child by promoting his/her development of social/emotional competencies, physical, cognitive, and language skills.  We provide them with opportunities for observing, exploring and interacting with materials and other people in a manner appropriate to their ages and stages of development.  The educational aspects of the various Head Start components are integrated into the daily program activities.

Our curriculum is scientifically researched and theory based.

The assessment system shows children’s progress from one assessment period to the next.  The data is analyzed to help teachers individualize and plan for groups of children.
